Fort William Oban And The Scenic Highlands

Resort - Fort William

Overview

Fort William, the “Outdoor Capital of the UK”, is not only an important tourist centre but also a splendid location from which to explore the magnificent Western Highlands. It is situated at the southern end of the Great Glen, on the shores of Loch Linnhe, beneath towering Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain. For those who do not feel quite up to the ascent of Ben Nevis, nearby Aonach Mor offers Britain's only alpine cable car, rising over 2000 feet to the Snowgoose restaurant, from where there are spectacular views of the Great Glen. The surrounding countryside has some of Britain’s most spectacular and romantic scenery and its torrid history has produced over 30 battlefields in the Lochaber area alone. As a touring centre, Fort William is unrivalled and our splendid excursion programme makes the best of this with coverage of many of the area's most interesting places.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Outward Travel

Day 2 - Road to the Isles to Mallaig

  • We travel from Fort William to Mallaig on the A830, one of the most scenic roads in the world and known as the Road to the Isles. We stop at Glenfinnan, where we hope to see the famous Jacobite Steam train travel across the Glenfinnan Viaduct, as seen in the Harry Potter films. Our journey continues through several small villages, including Arsaig. We follow the shorelines of Loch Eil and Loch Eilt and pass through a series of glens, before taking in the silver sands of Morar and Loch Sheil. Our destination is Mallaig, a port in Lochabar, where you can watch the ferries going to and from the Scottish islands, enjoy some freshly caught seafood, or browse the craft shops, before returning and relaxing whilst enjoying the spectacular scenery on the famous A830 taking in the Silver Sands of Morar and then Loch Shiel.

Day 3 - Half Day to Oban

  • Known as the Gateway to the Isles, this bustling port on the Firth of Lorne commands fine views of the Argyll coast. Shops are along the sea front around the “little bay”, which gives Oban its name and fresh fish is always for sale on the busy pier and regular ferries leave from the harbour to the Hebridean Islands. McCaigs Tower dominates the skyline overlooking the harbour and other major landmarks include the pink granite cathederal and 600 year old ruined keep of Dunollie Castle. On our journey we pass Inveraray, seat of the Dukes of Argyll, Loch Awe and the remarkable Falls of Lora.
  • Free time in the afternoon to explore the delights of Fort William and its traditionally Scottish shops and attractions. Perhaps take a cruise on Loch Linnhe, or a scenic ride on the Ben Nevis Range Gondola (entrance fees apply).

Day 4 - Return Travel

Croit Anna Hotel

Situated on the shores of Loche Linnhe, three miles from the centre of Fort William, with spectacular views across the loch from all of the public rooms and most of the bedrooms, the Croit Anna offers a comfortable and friendly base in which to relax.
