Lakes And Dales

Resort - Shap

Overview

Ideally situated for exploring the Lakes, Dales and Penines, Shap is a small but busy village nestled in the Eden Valley. The surrounding hills contain distinctive pink granite, which is used across the world in famous buildings such as St Paul’s Cathedral. Historic sights around the village include a ruined Abbey, restored mediaeval stone chapel and ancient stone circle, although these are accessed only by cross-country footpaths. In the village is a traditional pub, chip shop, and a footwear factory outlet.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Outward Travel

Day 2 - Full day to the Yorkshire Dales

  • Today we travel to the Yorkshire Dales. We’ll venture to the attractive old market town of Sedbergh, with its old world atmosphere and situated in a lovely spot between the Howgill Fells and the Dales. We continue to the magical little market town of Hawes, one of England's highest towns, set 850 feet above sea water. Hawes is famous for its Wensleydale Cheese and we will also find the lively Tuesday market in full swing, with its wonderful array of food gift and shops.

Day 3 - Full day to Grasmere, Ambleside and cruise on Lake Windermere

  • We pass Thirlmere and Helvellyn en-route to Grasmere. Nestling at the foot of spectacular fells, Grasmere boasts its own lake. You can also visit Wordsworth's grave in the churchyard and buy the legendary Grasmere Gingerbread from the tiny shop in the grounds of the parish church. We continue on to bustling Ambleside from where we take a scenic boat trip on Lake Windermere.

Day 4 - Full day to Pooley Bridge and Keswick

  • We travel to north to the charming village of Pooley Bridge, then along the side of Ullswater to the market town of Keswick. The town is situated between Skiddaw, the 6th highest mountain in the UK and amongst the gentle beauty of Derwentwater. This pretty market town offers a wide range of attractions, including the outdoor market, a museum and boating trips around lake Derwentwater (charges apply).
